Dear readers,
During my management training, as we approached the completion of our accountancy degrees, an unforgettable experience unfolded before me. It was a lesson that would forever shape my understanding of leadership—the power of trust and the growth that emerges from embracing mistakes.
As the training commenced, we were tasked with forming groups and confronting a range of challenges. Eager to take charge, I stepped forward, driven by the desire to assemble a team that would stand out among the rest. But I wasn’t fast enough in selecting the team members. While other leaders swiftly selected their members, I found myself with a group of timid accountants, lacking the confidence to command the stage. Despite this apparent setback, I harbored a flicker of belief. I knew in my heart that our collective potential could transcend our initial limitations—we could become an extraordinary team, an A team.
Our first challenge loomed large—a pivotal bank proposal, where we would present our case for a loan. I divided the workload, assigning some team members the responsibility of preparing the financials. However, as the final presentation drew near, a stark reality emerged. They struggled with basic Excel skills, rendering their work unfit for the task at hand.
Without my own laptop, I borrowed my brother’s computer and toiled through the night, meticulously crafting the presentation. The morning arrived, and with it, the bittersweet realization that I had to return the borrowed laptop. Fueled by a mix of nerves and determination, I downloaded the completed presentation onto a USB drive, attending our training session armed with the relentless pursuit of improvement. Borrowing yet another laptop, I added the final touches, the weight of exhaustion heavy upon me. Then, with trembling hands, I delivered the presentation, knowing it wasn’t flawless, but hoping that its essence would shine through.
Anticipation hung in the air as we awaited the results, unsure of what they would bring. And then, as if by magic, we claimed second place! The judges recognized the strength of our content, while highlighting areas for improvement in our delivery. It was a moment of collective joy, an affirmation of our shared dedication. Yet, it was what followed that truly astounded us.
Inspired by my unwavering belief and dedication, my team members stepped forward for the subsequent presentation. Empowered by newfound confidence, they took the stage, ready to conquer. And to our amazement, we emerged victorious—without any direct involvement from me. It was a revelation that forever altered my perception of leadership.
Unbeknownst to me, by providing our team with the space to make mistakes and learn from them, I had ignited a flame within each of them. Their journey did not end with that triumph, but rather, it marked the beginning of their ascent. In the years that followed, these individuals thrived in their careers, fueled by the self-assurance they gained from that pivotal experience. To this day, I am humbled by their expressions of gratitude, as they attribute their success to the trust and empowerment I instilled in them.
This experience taught me a profound lesson—one that lingers in my every leadership decision. It would have been easier for me to prepare the presentation from the beginning, ensuring a higher chance of securing first place. But in doing so, I would have denied my team the opportunity to make mistakes, learn, and bounce back. I would have shouldered the burden of hard work solely, constantly pushing myself without allowing others to grow.
As business owners and team leaders, it is crucial to recognize the transformative power of mistakes. By creating an environment where errors are not only accepted but embraced as opportunities for growth, we empower our teams to reach their fullest potential. When we trust them to navigate challenges, make decisions, and learn from their missteps, we unlock a wellspring of innovation and resilience.
In those moments when it seems easier to take control and do it all ourselves, let us pause and consider the long-term impact. True leadership lies in the ability to nurture the talents of others, to inspire them to surpass their own expectations. It is through the growth and development of our team members that we lay the foundation for lasting success.
So, dear readers, let us embrace the power of mistakes. Let us create an environment where growth flourishes, where every stumble becomes a stepping stone towards greatness. By giving our teams the room to make mistakes, learn, and bounce back, we sow the seeds of a remarkable transformation—an evolution from a B team to an extraordinary A team.
Wishing you a week filled with inspiration, growth, and the courage to embrace the power of mistakes.
Warm regards,
Deepti Agarwal ACA
